And thus, the Moustache Wizard was no more….
For those of you who haven’t studied their fantasy lore, a lich is an undead wizard, and dangerous as shit. So Winslow has every right to be worried here.
This comic kind of got away from me. I tried drawing it with the paper in landscape position, but the position of the boxes made it difficult to fit in Ben, Winslow, the priest, and the tombstone. When I flipped the paper, I had more space than I anticipated, so I started adding in more and more people into the funeral scene. First the Moustache Wizard’s wife and kids, then Quentin and Kurt… but I still had a ton of room, and since we’re worried about a lich I drew Billy from Adventure Time and a mustachioed Metroid.
Fun fact: A long time ago, I had decided that the buttons were going to be the handiwork of Kurt the Cynic’s brother, who didn’t have a name at the time but was going to be referred to as “the Misanthrope.” Even though this never became a comic of its own, the idea of Kurt having a misanthropic sibling never went away, and eventually the character became his sister, Reya the Misanthrope, who we see here causing button-related trouble.

Andrew Kaye (known in some circles as AK) is the creator of Ben & Winslow and other questionable comics, many of which can be found in his deviantART gallery and his Tumblr. He’s also the editor-in-chief of this magazine. Duh?
