Hey Man, Kids Are Weird

Today we move away from the hedonistic world of gummi bears and into the cuter realm of child-inspired comics. “My birthday is in a submarine” is something my three-year old has been telling me for the past month, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what he’s talking about. I told him his birthday was in August, and he answered, “Yes. August is a submarine.”

Your guess is as good as mine, folks.

Technical note: I tried something different with this one,  though you can’t tell. Normally, after I draw the pencil sketch, I outline everything in black colored pencil. Then I color the image, but a lot of times I have to go over certain parts again with the black pencil*. Since I was in a rush, I decided to color this as a sketch first, and then do the black outlines afterwards. The process worked, but since I threw everything out of order, I forgot to add shading to Ben’s tie. Oh well…

*This isn’t true when I color things in grayscale. Which is why, when I’m really pressed for time, comics end up in fifty shades of gray. Wait. What?

Andrew Kaye (known in some circles as AK) is the creator of Ben & Winslow and other questionable comics, many of which can be found in his deviantART gallery. He’s also the editor-in-chief of this magazine. Duh?
