06102016 Be Kind to Robots

———–

It’s easy to hate people with their stupid faces and their stupid mouths saying stupid things, but it’s very hard to hate robots. They do so much for us without complaining. They make our cars and clean our floors and babysit our children with hardly any errors at all.

A few months ago my wife accidentally bought an automated garbage can online. She was suffering from sleep deprivation and insomnia (always a dangerous combination), and in the wee hours she thought buying this thing would be a good idea. We didn’t return it because it seemed like a cool device, especially for my notoriously germaphobic wife; the lid opens when you wave your hand over a motion sensor, so your delicate flesh doesn’t have to come into contact with whatever toxic waste you’ve got brewing in the garbage can’s belly. It didn’t take long before I started calling it our “robot” around the kids, thanking it every time it opened its lid for me. My 3-year-old has latched on to this idea and now thanks the garbage can (“mommy’s robot”) whenever he throws something away.

I apologize for the garish green of the first panel. It doesn’t look so bright in person, but once it was scanned it went nuclear.

Andrew Kaye (known in some circles as AK) is the creator of Ben & Winslow and other questionable comics, many of which can be found in his deviantART gallery and his Tumblr. He’s also the editor-in-chief of this magazine. Duh.
