Christopher Woods lives in Houston and in Chappell Hill, Texas. It is in the latter place that he hears coyotes cry at night. He doesn’t mind them as much as the occasional skunk that shows up unannounced.

When I asked Mr. Thurman about his painting “Wanna Play,” he looked at me with such intensity that I feared he was trying to turn me inside out with his mind. After three minutes of unsettling eye contact, Mr. Thurman gave up this pursuit and said to me, “When voices call from the outer room, one must ignore them or embrace them, making the demon friend or foe.”

“Are we talking about Eileen?” I asked. “She’s the only person in there.”

“What? No.”

“I don’t think she’d like it if she heard you calling her a demon.”

“That’s not what I meant. Can we just changed the subject?”

“Yeah,” I said. “Sure. Uh, what did you use to make this painting? What sort of state of mind were you in?” 

“Mixed media. While intoxicated.”

“You’re awesome. Let’s go befriend some demons.”

Randy Thurman says: “There are two kinds of people in the world, and I am neither. My source of inspiration often comes from sipping a glass of Merlot while wearing a black ski mask, and occasionally listening to piano works by Schoenberg while humming Mozart’s Requiem.” Randy Thurman is an artist, musician, composer, poet, writer, etc. living and working in rural south east Tennessee.
