Greatness

By Gerald So

I moved into an office with
Greatness four years ago;
he was on leave at the time.

When he returned,
we came in on the same days,
but I set my hours around his.

When I studied under Greatness,
he ripped my work to shreds
almost joyfully,

and no one believed
or acknowledged
he could be a prick.

As colleagues, we smiled
or waved warmly enough
but never talked

until he asked,
"Can I have the office
on the days I'm here?"

Gerald So wanted to be an author since age 13, when he envied a classmate whose book was published in the school library. He's glad to have lived long enough to see his own work in print, and will continue to write as long as he breathes.
