When describing his art, Dion told us that we could call it childlike, colorful, self-revealing, erotic, funny, and strange. Or we could describe it as having lots of eyes. We like all of those descriptions, but for this particular piece we’re going to leave out the word “erotic,” because honestly, no one wants to think about Oompa Loompas that way. Not even female Oompa Loompas.

Are there even female Oompa Loompas? Can someone look into that?

Dion Hitchings is inspired by people he sees and works with, dreams, plants at the nursery, news items, guests on Jerry Springer, and nature. He tries to draw/paint a self-portrait every day to keep up the discipline. Mr. Thurman creeped me the hell out during our last interview, but he more than made up for it by buying me a drink later that day. While at the bar I asked him about another painting of his, “Insomnia.”

 

“When sleep is deprived, psychosis sets in.”

 

“Ha! Tell me about it! There was this one time, when Eileen tried to—”

 

“The two are enemies that shall never make amends.”

 

“Who? Eileen and me?”

 

“No, no, you’re not listening. I’m talking about insomnia.”

 

“The painting or the movie? Al Pacino and Robin Williams were in that one. Robin Williams is normally hilarious, but frankly I don’t find murder all that funny. That and cancer. The only way Robin Williams could have been less funny would be if he murdered people with cancer.”

 

“Insomnia is merely a method of psychological and physical torture.”

 

“Seriously, I don’t know if you’re talking about the movie or not.”

Randy Thurman says: “There are two kinds of people in the world, and I am neither. My source of inspiration often comes from sipping a glass of Merlot while wearing a black ski mask, and occasionally listening to piano works by Schoenberg while humming Mozart’s Requiem.” Randy Thurman is an artist, musician, composer, poet, writer, etc. living and working in rural south east Tennessee. Randy’s art has exhibited at Monkdogz Urban Art, Gallery 181 and the Jay Etkin Gallery just to name a few. Randy’s music has traveled throughout the US and abroad in London, Belgium, and Australia.
